The Science department prides itself on delivering engaging lessons that support learning with relevant practicals. Students are encouraged to question the world around them and draw conclusions of their own based on evidence from their practical work and class discussion.
The Science Department delivers the Edexcel 1-9 GCSE Combined syllabus (2 GCSEs) to provide the most suitable route for students to achieve success in this all important core subject. Students start the GCSE in Year 9 after the February half term and start the first topics in Biology and Chemistry. As the course is linear, there are no exams sat in Year 10, with all terminal exams sat in the summer examination period of Year 11. There is the opportunity to study separate sciences (three GCSEs, one in each science) and this is a big commitment for those planning to follow a career involving science.
In KS3, Years 7-9
With the change to linear GCSEs, we have implemented a linear KS3 syllabus to better prepare students for the upcoming GCSE content. This course is from Edexcel and provides a solid foundation for the new GCSE course. Students study key concepts from the three sciences alongside gaining the practical skills they will require for the core practicals in the GCSE. Lessons focus on engaging students whilst improving their ability to problem solve, research information and gain confidence in science.

Year 7 Cells and reproduction, atoms and acids, forces and electricity
Year 8 Plants and respiration, the Periodic Table and metals, light and energy
Year 9 Genetics, reactivity and motion
What will GCSE Science be like?
GSCE Science provides challenge at every level; lessons are designed to be engaging whilst delivering the large amount of content in the Science specification. Independent learning is encouraged and supported alongside a provision for students requiring additional support. The intention is that Science will be memorable for students when they leave Brymore and they will consider a future in a scientific field.

How many exams do I take and when?
With the move to linear exams and the new GCSE structure, exams take place in Year 11 only with no coursework element.
In Year 11
Students will sit two exams in each science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). These six exams are averaged to give students their final grade for science. This could be a 5-5 grade or a 5-4 grade overall.
